Mythological Formalism – “The Dragonfly” ANALYSIS #2

Mythological Formalism – “The Dragonfly”

Three perfect mermaids, half-submerged in a frothy blueness
That is falling into an abyss of pastel
Surrounding an outcropping of stone,
They form a semi-circle around a single swan’s egg

Completing the circle is a swan
With a lowered neck, and an intent focus
These creatures of beauty inhabit
Their space with symmetry

Atop the egg lies a dragonfly
Clutching at the fragile shell with purpose
This is object of focus, the center of the painting
The setting sun casts a sense of urgency

This séance blends beauty with fragility
Danger with Immortality
Nothing in this painting is real, but
Everything is pregnant with significance
